Like a faithful echo, I will never tire of repeating Socrates' immortal axiom: "Man, know thyself". Indeed, what can
possibly be the end result of a person's efforts in their search of the knowledge of transcendental and higher mysteries,
if they have not first acquired the knowledge of the laws acting within them and affecting their destiny!
All you who yearn for higher knowledge write down this immortal axiom in bold letters so as to have it constantly before
you. Believe me, the result will be a happy one and this act will affect your course through life both as persons and as
initiates.
After this word of advice - which I consider very valuable to all - let us pass on to the subject of our meeting which is
summed up in the various thoughts and reflections that touch upon the troubling problem of Reincarnation.
Is Reincarnation a real fact? Is it the result of speculation by the ancient priesthood and consequently pure theory? In
the first case, can it be proved by facts, manifestations or other indications that can convince logic and satisfy reason?
These are the considerations we are faced with for the solution to the problem.
Life is a continuous and perpetual movement that stirs Matter in the created Universe, that kneads it in invisible moulds,
that annihilates it only to give it new strength, that destroys it only to revive it under new aspects. In following its
eternal goal, does this life act in the same manner on forms of a subtler Essence, does it bring about the same
transformations over there as it does down here? In brief, is the Law of Life and Death one that acts on all the levels of
Being in the way it acts on the levels of Non-Being?
It is about time, I think, to answer these numerous questions.
Due to the nature of the subject, I shall limit my scope of research to Man and his nature. Two principles constitute the
human being: the principle Being, commonly called Spirit, and the principle Non-Being, commonly called Matter.
Originally, the Being and the Non-Being, in complete separation, ignored one another. The first had the advantage of
knowledge and therefore was in repose, deprived of the Non-Being. The second had the qualities of order but, far from the
Being, was therefore condemned to chaotic disorder.
Was it due to premeditation, to error or to corruption? Was it a sublime conception, a primary Will or desire that made the
Being - guided, directed or urged by its higher state of conscience - to project itself into the very core of the
Non-Being?
According to legends, the shock that ensued was terrible and the Non-Being was forced to come out of Nothingness by the
aggregation (cohesion) of its atoms. From absolute disorder, it was obliged to manifest order in some of its expressions.
The outcome of the shock produced by these two contrary principles was a third principle that preserved the forms acquired
through the great struggle. This third principle, which is the Passive Being, is commonly called the Soul or Psyche.
These three principles therefore constitute Man - this molecule of the Universe, on Earth as elsewhere.
They are:
-
The active and generating Being
-
The passive or fertile Being
-
The neutral or receptive Non-Being.
In Man, these three principles manifest four states. They are:
-
The Ego, found beyond the active Being.
-
Mens (or Mental State), found below the active Being and beyond the passive Being.
-
Sens (or Sensorial State) found below the passive Being and beyond the Non-Being.
-
The Etheric or nervous State (to use a term similar to the cosmic theory), which is below the
Non-Being.
In brief, Man is constituted of 7 externalisations, 3 of which are Principles of Being and 4 are States of Being.
I will not enter into a detailed study of the theory of Cosmogony and Androgony for it would take up too much of our time.
I shall stop here so as not to deviate from the present subject but I am ready to discuss this at another time.
The constitution of the human being when incarnate and living in Creation is the one I have just described. Now let us see
what takes place at the moment of death, that is, at the moment of a disaggregating action in the constituent state of the
human being that we have just described.
According to the above theory, it would be natural to consider that a dead person presents the aspect of a separation of
the Being from the Non-Being. This concept has become a sort of tradition in the uninitiated world of religions. 'The soul
leaves the body'; 'the spirit leaves matter'. These are expressions that contain a great paradox, for how can such a
disconnection take place in the created Universe without compromising the state of Being and the first Cause?
The inert corpse lying before us, apparently devoid of all movement, possesses in it as much life as a plant and more than
a mineral. Therefore, the phenomenon of death is not the fact of a separation of the two principles that constitute the
Universe but it is the withdrawal of an over-life that dwelt in a form of life.
I need not mention the fruitless attempts made by alchemists to kill Matter.
Death can therefore be likened to certain submarine plants (i.e. the coral) that belong to two kingdoms: mineral and
vegetable. Thanks to the living polyp, they fertilize and prosper, but once the polyp leaves, they become sterile and
unchanging, till Man's hand breaks them to adorn women's necks or until life - this eternal movement - touches them to
disintegrate and give them a new form.
Thus, death in a human being is nothing else than the withdrawal of Man himself from his visible husk (envelope) to unknown
destinies.
Discarnate Man has the same constitution as incarnate man's 3 principles and 4 states which after death can preserve the
form that Man has just left, within the 4th state.
Discarnate Man is not yet an unchanging and eternal form. Now, out of his material husk, he is liable to undergo a new
disintegration which, this time, can be fatal for the State of Ego of his Being.
The various apparitions of dead persons haunting the living for centuries, apparitions through mediums, apparitions to
those in a trance, apparitions that are sudden and without cause are no proof at all of Mans immortality after
disembodiment. Just as the presence of a person among us for many years does not prove his immortality, so the
manifestation of a discarnate being to those living cannot be proof of his immortality.
Discarnate Man lives in 'Natura naturata' for a greater or lesser time, according to the corruptibility of his principle
Non-Being and the two States related to it: the Etheric or nervous State and the Sensorial State.
These beings (discarnate human beings) bathe in the etheric mass of 'Natura naturata' and are nourished by assimilation.
This is the reason for the cult of the dead in ancient times.
After a time, the 4th State disintegrates and then the discarnate being undergoes a new and considerable alteration,
similar to the first: it is de-etherised, dies a second time and rises to the region of 'Natura naturans', This is the
region of transformations, terrible for those who penetrate into it with corruptibility in them.
Ruthless Laws of a sensorial nature attract the beings and make a selection accordingly. Thus, the discarnate and
de-etherised beings undergo the effect of transformation: all corruptible constituent elements are purified and new, pure
elements replace the corrupt.
Now Man, having become new and not in any way resembling his past image, is projected by these very Laws into the worlds of
Matter. He dons a new husk and resumes his activity, with its hardships and pains, and his unrestrained course in search of
happiness.
Ladies and Gentlemen, do not think that what I have just told you is a yarn to keep you interested; it is a reality based
on laws that are widely unknown, though very well known to an elite of men that have haunted the remotest regions of earth
since all time.
The facts that I have just mentioned fall under the provisions of the 2nd category of universal laws called Sensorial Laws.
The 1st category is that of Conscious Laws and the 3rd that of Mechanical Laws or - in a happier term Laws of Harmony.
We shall discuss these three categories of laws in great detail at another time.
To sum up our exposition: Man dies the first death by disembodiment, in this state of life, he still retains his
personality. He then dies a second time by de-etherisation. In this third stage, he loses his personality of Ego and
becomes impersonal after the transformations he undergoes due to the purification of his Sensorial and Mental states.
My dear brothers and sisters on Earth, do not despair upon hearing my words, for what I have just told you touches upon
only one aspect of death. There is another one, towards which our hopes of immortality can tend.
At the end of long periods of cycles during which Man passed through the stages that I have just mentioned alternating from
consciousness to unconsciousness - he attained the degree of that perfection which rendered the States of his being pure.
He then became incorruptible. Thus, while passing through the different stages, he retained the conscience of the Ego and
of his personality.
This was the first agony of human life on our poor Earth, until Divine Messengers came to draw Man away from the path of
error and steer him to the path leading to immortality.
Many generations were drawn away from inexistence and impersonality. However, in the intermediate stages between these
various 'revivals', due to the moral law of life and death, Man deviated from the path traced for him by the Divine
Messengers.
Then God, the incarnate Word, came in turn to scourge corruption by His creative Word. In a brilliant gesture of triumph,
love and self-denial, He climbed Golgotha, the symbolic path of salvation.
People followed Him; but do they keep following Him?
This is the reason of the present disorder in humanity.
The race of the immortals is disappearing from Earth and since the middle of the last century the surface of our Earth has
been peopled with mortals in pain.
Men of Science, men of Matter, your efforts are futile, for confusion awaits you at the end of your existence! It is not in
Science alone that you will find that which is necessary so that your works may live - Immortality. Your works seem to
triumph with intelligence but their material brilliance besmirches simple and pure morality and they are mortal and
destructive works. Your inspirations come to you from the depths of the dark Earth and their effects return to it.
This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is the aphorism that can be hurled against those who deny immortality and who pay homage to
materialistic Science that can banish Morality.
I mentioned Divine Messengers and in brief touched upon the existence of a path that can perfect a person and ensure
immortality.
I now hasten to clarify what might have seemed obscure, by presenting the nature of the path that can ensure
incorruptibility to the constituent parts of Man and, as a result, immortality of his Ego and of his personality.
I am certainly neither the first nor the worthiest to speak to you of this path, neither will I be the last; anyway, I am
sure I am the least qualified.
The path to immortality is the path of Love, When the Son of Man cried on the wayside and in the wilderness: "Men, be as
brethren to one another, love one another as I have loved you, for this is where salvation lies and then you will all
participate in the Kingdom of Heaven," He meant: "Men, purify all the States of your being that are troubled by elements
alien to your nature, that can give rise to hate and perversion within you and that render these States too weak to receive
the influence of the Conscious and Sensorial Laws".
Through Love and all its attributes, apply yourselves to creating within you the virtues of Goodness, Kindness and Charity,
so that at the time of your passage through the successive stages of life - in natura naturata and natura naturans - you
may not be annihilated by the Guardians of the Threshold that ancient traditions speak of.
This is the symbolic meaning of the Egyptian Tribunal of Osiris and of the Christian Hell.
Your main task during your earthly existence should be to ensure the immortality of your Ego and of your personality by
rendering your States healthy, by leading a life of pure customs and morals and by creating the imperishable virtues of
Love within you. On reaching the end of your material existence, you will be able to face death with joy and serenity, for
death will then mean Resurrection to you and Immortality to your destiny.
Having thus determined the effects of the Laws of Life and Death and the reincarnations that result from the imperfection
of our nature, let us now pass to a new consideration on Reincarnation by setting the following question: Is a person who
has attained the immortality of their Ego and personality reincarnated? If so, what are the conditions and reasons for this
reincarnation?
I shall answer the first question in the affirmative.
A person who has attained the immortality of their Ego and of their personality is reincarnated under the influence of the
Conscious Laws so as to perfect their Mental State. Because our Ego is an emanation of an Ego many times superior to ours,
by its very origin it tends to resemble the mental image of its generator and to get nearer to him without fusing with him.
The person who has attained the incorruptibility of their Sensorial State through Love will be reincarnated so as to attain
the perfection of their Mental State through Wisdom.
These reincarnations fall under the Conscious Laws and are not subject to the troubles and disorders of material life. The
beings that are in this stage of their evolution in spite of the disturbances to which the adversary is pleased to submit
them proceed in their ascending path with serenity, assurance and scorn for all hindrance.
The previous reincarnations are of an individual not of a collective nature, whereas the reincarnations that aim at
perfecting the Mental State, though remaining individual, are of a collective nature, as a Race. Indeed, after material
death or disembodiment, the beings that have attained a certain degree of intellectuality or of perfection of their Mental
State, rise to a region that lies above that of Natura naturans. This, according to the Eonian doctrine, is called the
Celestial Soma. It is the eternal dwelling of the Generators, as opposed to the inferior or superior Cosmic Soma, a name by
which this said doctrine qualifies the regions of Natura naturata and Natura naturans, already mentioned.
Upon reaching the Celestial Soma they await the coming of their Race and its rise towards more orderly and harmonized
regions of the created Universe.
In spiritism as well as in occultism, there used to be a theory claiming that in Man's successive reincarnations he was
transported from an inferior planet to a superior one of our solar system and that in pursuing his course of evolution, he
penetrated into the heart of the Universe. This theory of Man's journey in our solar system has died away because it was
basically wrong.
Our solar system as all others - is an integral whole and all its component parts, even the smallest ones, have an affinity
between them and a very marked relationship. Orphic and Pythagorean Astrosophy, as well as the Chaldeo-Egyptian, have made
known to us the powerful action of planets on one another as well as on the created beings residing on them. Through these
same sciences, we learn of the indelible psychical and material marks of the stars on beings throughout their physical
existence. Thus, one marked by the seal (influence) of Saturn, Jupiter or Mars carries out its effects without having to
undergo this inter-astral journey. Besides, since our planet is not the smallest, had inhabitants from inferior planets
come and been reincarnated here, we would have had a deeper notion - by the law of remembrance - of both the state and the
things on those inferior planets. Proof of this is that the science of astronomy of today has not for a single moment
admitted - contrary to all other sciences any hypothesis, but only those so-called certainties derived from the obvious
effects of calculations.
As regards the theory of a person's reincarnation in distant and higher regions of the created Universe, this would be
admissible if considered as collective and serving as a passage towards Reintegration.
These, Ladies and Gentlemen, are the general considerations regarding Reincarnation. I am not yet through, however, for I
shall now discuss the secondary considerations that are more attractive and that ennoble the nature of Man in his perfect
state.
Having undergone 30 cycles of reincarnation, complicated by the double death, primitive Man then attained the state of
incorruptibility and penetrated into a Soma that is higher than the Cosmic one, that is, into a level that is higher than
the astral plane of occultists, higher than Natura naturata and Natura naturans. Since his Ego became immortal, he
continued his evolution in conditions exempt of all needs, which in our material world are the source of all our pain.
The evolution of these beings was attained by the effects of the activities of beings living on lower levels as well as by
the activity of beings living on a level higher than theirs.
Among the ancient peoples, the Egyptians were so imbued by a deep love for their forebears that they committed a grave
error.
In Egypt, reincarnation was known to the priesthood with great exactitude. This caste was at the same time the nucleus of
Wise Men and Initiates of the time. The legend of the 72 transformations of Osiris, the titanic war waged by Horns against
Set for the salvation and resurrection of his father, provide convincing evidence of the knowledge the Egyptians had
regarding reincarnation. Yet this truth was carefully concealed from the secular and very badly understood by the lower
priesthood.
At about the 4th Egyptian Dynasty - about 6000 years BC - an erroneous interpretation of the doctrine of reincarnation and
the terrible fear of the second death led the Egyptians to mummify their dead ones so as to avoid this redoubtable death.
This Luciferian conception, applied by men who were powerful in wisdom - as the Egyptian Wise Men were - caused a
formidable blow to the Sensorial Laws that act on our Earth, The effects of this disastrous blow are felt by contemporary
humanity.
Allow me to dwell on this point, for I consider that the destinies of our Race, the White Race, are closely linked to it.
When the revelation regarding the second death was announced to the Sages of Egypt, their love for their forebears, already
deeply rooted in the Egyptian soul, was cruelly wounded.
How could it be that this old venerable man, full of wisdom, goodness and love, full of compassion for the miserable and
the suffering, how could he die, be lost and disappear for ever? Thus, in deep pain did the pious descendant of the dead
old man meditate on this irreparable fact.
Then Ptah Sokaris, the Egyptian Lucifer, made use of his superior power over Anubis, the god of the dead, and made him
reveal to Men the means by which their dead ones could be saved from the second death. The plan was as follows:
Any dead person whose material husk retained its form intact had the faculty of keeping alive and escaping the second
death, following a ritual that reattached the defunct to his material body.
Not only did Anubis reveal this Luciferian truth to the Egyptians but he also provided them with the material means by
which they could preserve the corpses of their dead ones eternally, by mummifying them.
Their primary concern therefore was to deliver the corpse of their loved one to the embalmers so that he might be preserved
from destruction. At the same time, those who were wealthy placed orders to the sculptors of the Necropolis for statues of
the dead one. These statues were set in the burial vault - now called "Serdab" by the Arab excavators - near that of the
mummy. This was done in case, for some reason or another, the mummy should be destroyed by a mishap. Then the soul of the
dead one could take possession of one of these statues and continue its existence.
The custom of mummification persisted for 6500 years. This is why the Egyptian soil is strewn with innumerable statues to
which millions of beings were enslaved, condemned to an existence more painful than the second death.
Early last century, archaeologists turned their attention and efforts to Egypt and explored the earth. Hundreds of
thousands of mummies were brought to light and were burnt for fear of an epidemic and for the cleansing of the ground. This
apparently trifling fact caused an upheaval in the Cosmic Soma or astral plane, as it is called by modern occultists.
Initiates who had the power to penetrate into this plane witnessed horrible visions. These beings who had been condemned by
their descendants to a false immortality were now delivered to the Sensorial Laws which had regained their freedom and
which subjected them to the natural consequence of reincarnation after the second death.
In the latter third of the past century, a destructive breath blew over the White Race. Science was set under the auspices
of materialism and one by one, the monuments of Christian morality were slowly but steadily overturned. This is due to the
collective reincarnation of the ancient Egyptian race into the world of northern and occidental civilization. The primitive
spirit of the profane, enveloped in science, continues its frenzied persecution of spirituality.
I shall now return to the secondary considerations regarding reincarnation.
The Conscious Laws - known by the external name of Divine Providence - were set into action so as to moderate the
disastrous effects of the reincarnation of lower beings. While hate, revenge, ambition, conceit and despotism are rampant
on Earth, ravaging humanity, beings that reside in the Celestial Soma - the eternal residence of Generators - beings that
have completed their evolution, human beings of a perfect Essence, have been sent to Earth. Humble and without renown, they
have been summoned to reinstate order and serenity by their nobler influence, to live a life of Love and its noble
attributes and finally to draw from danger all those of their brethren who tend to follow the path of truth.
On their descent to earth, these reincarnate beings, wandering among the crowds of a generation that is alien to them and a
state that is inferior to theirs, received a secret and unalterable sign, carried in their soul. This sign is the feeling
of attraction, friendship and sympathy towards all others on earth appointed by Divine Providence. Though wandering in the
midst of crowds, they eventually approach one another and gather together, urged by this secret spring which is the seal of
their reincarnation and they accomplish their mission in Kindness, Love and Charity, expressing the spirit of
self-sacrifice in the broadest sense and awaiting the time of the final restoration.
The secondary cause of reincarnation is the salvation of one's fellow persons.
